Protection Relay Testing & Commissioning
Functional testing, setting and final verification of overcurrent, distance, differential and transformer relays.
Protective relays are the most important line of defence in a substation: a wrong setting or an incomplete logic can mean a wide-area outage or damage to expensive equipment. At ENP, relay testing is more than "inject and record a number". Our process starts with the coordination study and setting verification, continues with functional, logic and trip-circuit testing, and ends with an official report and the final as-left setting file.

Relay settings
Settings must come from the short-circuit and protection coordination study. We receive the settings from the consultant or operator, load them into the relay and verify every parameter one by one, not only what is visible on the relay display. Typically checked and recorded:
- CT and VT ratios, secondary rated current (1 A / 5 A), CT polarity and phase sequence
- Pickup values, time multiplier (TMS / time dial) and curve type
- Setting groups (1 to 4) and group-change conditions
- Binary I/O mapping, LEDs and trip matrix
- Programmable logic, interlocks and auto-reclose
- Communication parameters: IP, IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-103, Modbus, DNP3 and time sync (SNTP / IRIG-B)
- Passwords, access levels and file versions (As-Found and As-Left)
Standard inverse-time curves (IEC 60255-151)
Formula:
| Curve | k | α |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Inverse (SI / NI) | 0.14 | 0.02 |
| Very Inverse (VI) | 13.5 | 1 |
| Extremely Inverse (EI) | 80 | 2 |
| Long-Time Inverse (LTI) | 120 | 1 |
Typical setting values (for orientation only)
| Protection | Parameter | Typical value |
|---|---|---|
| Phase overcurrent (51) | Pickup | 110 to 130 % of maximum load current |
| Earth fault (51N) | Pickup | 10 to 20 % of CT rated current (depends on system earthing) |
| Distance (21) | Zone 1 / Zone 2 / Zone 3 | 80–85 % of line / 120 % of line or line + 50 % of adjacent line / longer back-up zone |
| Transformer differential (87T) | Minimum pickup / slope | 0.2 to 0.3 In / dual slope, e.g. 25 and 50 % |
| Transformer differential (87T) | Harmonic restraint | 2nd harmonic about 15–20 %, 5th about 20–35 % |
| Over / undervoltage (59 / 27) | Pickup | About 110–115 % and 80–90 % of rated voltage |
Final values always come from the project's coordination study and the manufacturer's manual; the table above is for orientation only.
